I'm trying to convert a .mdb file into an .accdb and get the error message, "Could not use '<LOCATION OF THE MDB>'; file already in use." I didn't open any copy of this .mdb, I had only just opened Access and the only thing the file is being used for is to be converted to an .accdb.
I am getting the same error even if I open the database in Exclusive mode and do the convert.
Below were the steps that I followed for the conversion
1. Open Access in 2010.
2. Open the .mdb through file open database option.
3. Switchboard appears. Close the switch board
4. Go to File--Save & Publish--Save Database As(under File Types)--Access Database(*.accdb)(under Save Database As)--Save As (in the bottom)
5. Save as option appears (with the same mdb name but with a .accdb extension)
6. Click save
7. Error appeared.
Am I missing something?
The below work arounds are working fine.Anyhelp is highly appreciated
- Open the .mdb by holding down the shift key and follow the above steps 4 to 6 or
- Open a new .accdb and import all the database objects (forms, report, etc.,) from the .mdb that needs to be converted
Thanks

Is there any particular reason you wish to convert the file. .mdb files run just fine under Access 2007 and 2010. If it is an operating db and does not require any new programming or needs any features that are only available in 2007 or 2010, then why try to fix it if its not broken?
Just an afterthought; try running a compact and repair before you try to do the conversion. Just in case there is some corruption in your file.

alansidman,
We are in the process of upgrading all our office 2003 application into office 2010.
True the .mdb files are running just fine under 2007/2010.
No, I am getting the same error even after compact and repair.
But I figured out an other way to do this, and it is working just fine.Thank you
- Open the mdb and change the database's start up form to none from switchoard
- Convert it now to .accdb
- Open your accdb, change the database's start up form back to switchboard.

Interesting. Sounds like a bug in Access 2010. Perhaps you should report this to MS.
