    average speed

    hi all,

I am hoping that some one can help me,
I am using to excel 2007 to record my bike rides
    and have it set up like;

    Column A- is the date,
    Column B- is the distance,
    Column C- is the time,
    Column D -is the route,
Column E- is the total kms
Column F -is the name of the bike,
Column G- is the total time

but I want to add another column to show my average speed
but do not know how to do this!

    Hope someone can help

    Ian

Hi Ian, thanks for updating your title.

Isn't average speed simply distance / time? I'm not sure why you have two distance columns and two time columns, though. Can you explain that a little better as to what you want calculated, or better yet, post an example worksheet showing which columns are relevant?

    Thanks.

    hi paul,
    thanks for your email,
I have taken a photo of the worksheet, but do not know how to make it smaller it is (12.1 kb) and the forum's limit is 10 kb so I will try to explain as best as I can,

I have two columns for distance as I want one to be the
distance of each ride, & the other to be the total kms distance for the month
but would also like to see my average speed for each ride .

You can attach a workbook much larger than that.

    Re: average speed

    Hi Ian,

To calculate the average for each ride, use the following formula (this example would be for the first row of data in your example sheet (row 3):

    =B3/(C3*24)

This is actually a shortened version of the formula you could use, but I reduced it since that's what you'd do mathematically anyway (=(B3*60)/(C3*24*60), but the 60 in the numerator and denominator cancel each other out).

To calculate the total for the month, use the same format but reference your total kms and total time cells:

    =G3/(H3*24)

    ianmark,

Please don't quote whole posts. It just clutters the forum.
