    In Excel 2007,

Make sure your default 'save' format is set to one of the new formats, e.g. "Excel Workbook (*.xlsx)" in Excel Options. (Office button -> Excel Options -> Save).

Once you've made that change, close Excel, then re-open and open your troubled workbook. Re-save as .xlsm and hopefully you should be able to see the expanded columns. If not, please upload it.
