    set up CSV file

    I'm new at this.....
I have a 4 column file set up in Excel 2007.
I need to save it as a CSV file in order to upload it to another program.
    My column headings are:
    Email
    First Name
    Last Name
    Firm
When I save as .csv file, the file looks the same as the .xls file
Then, I copy and paste the .csv file to Notepad where, I believe it should show up with commas in between each field. This does not happen. The program I an uploading to need, the fields separated by commas.
Am I incorrectly setting up the Excel file? Should all fields be in one column with the titles in the heading separated by commas?
Thanks in advance for any help.....this is a time sensitive project!!!

    re: set up CSV file

See example. Open the .txt file with Notepad or Wordpad.

I saved the file as a .csv file and then changed the file extension to .txt.

If you change it back to .csv and double click on it, it will probably open in Excel.

Double clicking on a text file will open in Notepad or Wordpad.

    re: set up CSV file

    Not sure I follow......

Here are the steps I took:

Step 1: created excel file with 4 columns, each column has a heading [no special formatting and there are 100+ rows]
Step 2: saved as .xls file
Step 3: saved excel file as .csv [headings, columns, etc. appear the same as when the file was .xls - I do not see any commas]
    Step 4: opened notepad
Step 5: copied text [ all columns] from excel into notepad [appears as a "jumble of words" with spacing between fields, but no commas]

    What am I missing here?

    Re: set up CSV file

    Steps:

    1. Create a file in Excel, unless you already have one you want to use
    2. Save the file as an Excel file (.xslx) if you want to retain formats, etc., and use the file in Excel again
    3. Save the file as a comma separated file (.csv) file
    4. Close the Excel file ... you do not need to save it again unless you have made further changes
    5. Change the file extension of the comma separated file from .csv to .txt (in Windows Explorer)
    6. Open the .txt file in Notepad
    7. you should see, for example:

    a,b,c,1,2,3
    d,e,f,4,5,6
    g,h,i,7,8,9

    Regards
