Apply / change formating for time durations (m:ss and [ss])

    Hi guys,

I would like to convert a series of duration entries from m:ss to seconds (ie: [ss]). For example:

    Current data:
    0:47
    1:23
    12:05

    Desired output:
    47
    83
    725

So far I have attempted to do this through the number formatting options and custom number formats (following the help file documentation and previous forum threads), however the entries do not appear to change with different formatting, and I am not sure where the problem is.

The current format is 'General', however I am wondering if perhaps the data is entered as 'text' rather than 'numbers' ... ?

I do have a bit of experience with matlab and other data analysis programs, but I am reasonably new to Excel, and feel I may be overlooking something obvious.

    thanks,
    Ciaron
