Question Cannot Group pivot made from Data Model

    Hello,

On Sheet2 I have created a pivot table based off a Data Model relationship. When I try to GROUP my table into bins of 25 rows (as I did in Sheet1) the GROUP menu item is greyed out. I am really hoping this is simply my inadequate Excel skill rather than a lack of Excel functionality.. Group Pivot made on Data Model relationship.xlsm

QUESTION: Could anyone please tell me how to get the "Group" functionality working for a pivot table based off a Data Model relationshihp?

So very worried I won't be able to do this..
    Thanks again,
    Michelle

There is some problem due to changing XL versions.
Try to create new PT again.

PT created in 2013 will not allow updating in 2010. Thank you MS !

Hello gentlemen thank-you for your replies - - -however I have Excel 2013 and created this sheet from scratch using Excel 2013.

If you open my attached spreadsheet are you able to "Group" the pivot on Sheet2?

Well grouping won't work in earlier versions . Can you save it in an earlier version? ( I don't know 2013 at all I'm afraid)

Hi Pepe - do you mean to say that only version 2013 has the GROUP BY functionality for pivot tables? If this is the case then I'm not sure why you are asking me to save to an earlier version. Regardless, when I do try to do this for you the only choice I seem to have is Excel 1997 -- and I get many warnings/error messages of incompatible functionality.

No, of course. Grouping exists in other versions but when the PT is made in 2013, grouping is not allowed because the PT was made in 2013. That is probably what MS calls backward compatibility

Info for anyone having the same question:

    (1) PowerPivot add-in: You need this in order to GROUP on pivot tables which are based off a Table Relationship. I had this verified also on the Microsoft support forum (see here)

    (2) Excel versions with PowerPivot:

But for me, many people who would be using my spreadsheet have the Home & Student version of Office - so no PowerPivot for me.

    (3) Alternative solution for me: Copy the data from both tables into one big sheet (my tables have a 1:1 relationship). Use formulas if your users are adding rows to Table1 and Table2 so that the values automatically appear in the big sheet. Use normal pivot functionality.

Thumbs up Re: Cannot Group pivot made from Data Model

I was also able to get around this by adding a conditional column in my query in the data model.
