    Save charts as pdf

    Hi everyone,

I am looking for a way to export single charts as pdf files. I know that it is possible in Excel 2010 via the "Save As" Option, choosing .pdf as the file format and selecting to save only the selected chart in the Options dialog.

This however produces big white margins on the top and bottom in my case. When I copy the chart and paste it into, e.g. IrfanView or Microsoft Office Picture Manager, the margins are gone but I can no longer save it as an "infinitely zoomable with no loss of quality".pdf file (it is just saved as a picture in .pdf file format; in the case of the Microsoft Office Picture Manager it even is impossible to save the file as a .pdf at all).

Is there any way to accomplish this in Excel 2010 directly? I have read that in Excel 2011 for Mac there is a save as picture option directly in the context menu for a chart. Why is this not available in Excel 2010?

    Re: Save charts as pdf

First of all, how are you printing the chart to PDF?
With the chart selected or the worksheet selected?

Charts will typically expand to span across the page horizontally if they are on a worksheet, but how much vertical white space the charts uses is controlled by the height of the chart.

Assuming the chart is in a worksheet:
Set the worksheet page margins to the minimum allowable for your printer then, with the page margin in view, resize the chart to fill the print area.

However, be aware that improper resizing can distort the chart plot area due to incorrect aspect ratios.

You could also click on the chart, then on the Ribbon Menu choose Page Layout and set all margins to the minimum.
When printing the chart, make sure it is selected, not the worksheet. Again, you will need to manually resize the height.

    Easiest method:
Copy the chart into a chart sheet, set the page margins to the minimum. The chart should automatically resize to fill the margins.

    Re: Save charts as pdf

That's actually how I am doing it now. I am using a pdf-printer to produce my .pdf files, however, what I was looking for is an option to directly save diagrams as .pdf files via some sort of "Save as..." option. This oddly seems not to be available in the Windows version of Excel 2010 (while on a MAC with Excel 2011 it is).
