Question How to Create a Horizontal Error Bar

    Hi,

I have a scatter plot which has horizontal error bar for 1 data set. I wish to add another data set & horizontal error bar. I see the option to add an error bar, but I am only getting a vertical error bar option.

How to get or convert to horizontal?

    Thanks

Re: How to Create a Horizontal Error Bar

    Hi MyCon,

I would suggest you to add a horizontal error bar using data reference if there is only a vertical error bar option. Thanks.
Post the sample file so that forum can give a try. thanks.

Re: How to Create a Horizontal Error Bar

    Hi,

I already have a table or data set with one horizontal error bar. I thought I could simply add another, but I am only getting a vertical bar option. I may want to add a few more horizontal bars too.

    I'll post a file shortly.

Re: How to Create a Horizontal Error Bar

    Hi,

    I attached a file.

Here, you will see a blue horizontal bar. This represents "Planned" duration based from Column U. The "Planned" Height is controlled from Column W.

I want the brownish squares is suppose to represent the "Actual" duration based from Column X. However, I am only getting vertical option & can't figure out on how to convert or or add another horizontal bar.

    How to get this?

    Thanks

    Hi MyCon,

    Ok.. got the issue behind.

It goes like this... if it is Bar Chart type -> you'll get Horizontal error bar and
if it is Column chart type-> you'll get Vertical error bar..

Change the chart type to test above and edit accordingly. Thanks.

    Hi diilipandey,

I don't know what you mean? To obtain my horizontal bar, what should I be changing the chart type to? What else do I need to change?

    Thanks

Re: How to Create a Horizontal Error Bar

    Hi MyCon,

To obtain Horizontal bar, you need to have Bar chart type...

See the existing chart type you have and change accordingly, I have just shared the option using which you can have the horizontal bar.. Thanks.

    mycon73:

I apologize that I can't download the sample file (issues on my end).

Are you absolutely certain these charts (or the specific data series in question) are formatted as scatter plots? All of my scatter plots have an "x error bar" option in the format data series dialog. If I convert them to line charts, then the x error bar option disappears.

so my first thought is to be certain that you really do have a scatter plot.

Re: How to Create a Horizontal Error Bar

    My MrShorty & Others

Not sure if this is making a difference, but I am using Excel 2007.

I'm pretty sure it's considered a scatter plot with horizontal & vertical error bars. For whatever reasons, I cannot not make a 2nd or 3rd data set with horizontal bars.

I attached a screen shot of what I have & trying to do. As you will see, I have blue horizontal bars. This is suppose to represent my "planned" durations.

At the moment, I have brown squares that are supposed to represent the "actual" durations. However, I am only getting the vertical error bar option, even though the data set is similar to the "planned" or blue bar.

I can move my "actual durations vertically, but I have another control to do this, which is Column Y if you can get into the Excel file.

Hopefully, the screen shot represents what I have & what I want.

    Thanks everyone for the assistance.

Re: How to Create a Horizontal Error Bar

Unfortunately, I don't know my way around 2007's ribbon. I don't know of any reason why it isn't giving you an x error bar option if you are certain each series is plotted as a scatter plot. I know it is possible to create a combination chart where some series are plotted as XY scatter and others are plotted as Line, so you may need to check each data series and make sure Excel is correctly plotting it as XY scatter.

Here's a dummy spreadsheet I created that shows two data series with horizontal error bars on each data series.

Re: How to Create a Horizontal Error Bar

    Hi MrShorty,

Thanks for the example. Now, if I can only get this into my file....

How were you able to get the 2 horizontal bars? I would think if there's one, then adding a 2nd or 3rd should be relatively easy to add.

    Anyone else have any suggestions?

Re: How to Create a Horizontal Error Bar

After adding the 2nd data series, I simply entered the "format data series" dialog and selected the "x error bars" tab. I don't know where they put these dialogs in 2007, but I would expect it should be similar.

Re: How to Create a Horizontal Error Bar

    Hi MrShorty & Others,

For some reason, my chart is still not allowing me to create or convert to a horizontal error bar. If I change the "Actual" chart type to bar, I get some other nonsense that I don't want.

Using Excel 2007 - Can anyone suggest or modify my submitted example file & provide instructions on how it was done.

    Thanks....

Re: How to Create a Horizontal Error Bar

No need to change the chart type. You are using a xy-scatter which allow both X and Y error bars.

If you are having trouble selecting the error bars then use the dropdown in the Current Selection group on the Format tab of the Chart Tools ribbon.
In the dropdown list are the 4 error bar objects for the 2 series. Once selected use either the Format Selection or CTRL+1 to see the dialog.
    Cheers

Re: How to Create a Horizontal Error Bar

    Hi Everyone,

With a XY-Scatter chart, is there a restriction with how many X or Y bar datasets that once can have? With my example, I already have a horizontal error bar. Is this why I only seem to have a vertical option?

If this is the case, how can I take my existing data log & convert the chart to a Gantt chart that will show planned vs. actual? Please take my existing file & convert or provide instructions.

    Thanks

Re: How to Create a Horizontal Error Bar

A series, in an xy-scatter, can have an X error bar, with either value for positive or negative or both. Same for the Y error bar.
If you want a series to have 2 sets of X or Y error bars then you will need to use another series with the same data point values.

In your example file both series already have both X and Y error bars applied. As I explained, check the drop down list.

Re: How to Create a Horizontal Error Bar

    Hi Andy,

Sorry, I'm not quite following. I selected the chart, went to the Layout tab & Error Bars options. I selected my second dataset or "Actual" dataset. All I see is Vertical options. Is this because I already have a Horizontal Error bar & this type of chart does not permit to have more of the same type - horizontal or vertical error bars, even though there may be additional datasets?

Perhaps, you can take my example file & show me how it's done.

    Thanks

Re: How to Create a Horizontal Error Bar

    Hi Everyone,

I am trying to chart out a project's timeline progression planned vs. actual. At first glance, it appears that the XY Scatter plot would work well, assuming I could get at least 2 horizontal bars to represent the planned vs. actual durations.

If someone has a good Gantt chart or template that would be great too.

    Thanks again...

I stongly doubt it -- it would be a significant downgrade from my older version if true, because I seem to be able to add as many series as I want and have horizontal error bars on each data series. I have no idea at this point why you seem unable to add additional horizontal error bars. A few thoughts, in no particular order:

Your original sample sheet is xlsm -- macro enabled which implies that there are macros/VBA code that is essential for the file's operation. Is it possible there is something in the VBA code associated with the file that is blocking this option? Was the chart you are working on created by the Macros? Created by someone else? Would it work if you started with a new blank workbook?

    Select your chart.
Then use the drop down in the Current Selection group.

What items do you see in the list?

Re: How to Create a Horizontal Error Bar

    Hi Andy & Others,

That was the trick!!! I had it set for "Y" Axis & needed to change to "X" axis.

However, what confuses me is that the version or example file I used within this forum changed easily. However, my actual file does not or is not changing.

As far as I can see, I have the same parameters or settings.

    Any suggestions?
