horizontal axis displaying numbers instead of dates

Good day to anyone reading this,

I have a problem in excel with a specific requirement. I am using excel 2007 and I am trying to create a gantt chart in excel (I know it can be done easier using other software).

I am happy with everything but the dates on the horizontal axis. As you can see in the attached document, I can't have the axis points by month as it says the axis is a number value, a.k.a under format axis it says number values.

This means that I can't set the option to by month (which will select the date ranges to be the first of every month.). I have tried a work around where I edit the number value but it will never be the first of every month (as each 1st of the month is not set it is variable).

I have been struggling for quite a while on this so will appreciate any help.

I tried to implement a secondary series (where I could possibly set that as a date), but to no avail.
