How do I change the order of how excel builds a chart?

I am trying to build a bar chart and when I select the data source the chart
works, but the information is plotted in reverse order.

    I am using Excel 2002 SP3.

The help files indicate that I can reverse the order, but I cannot select
    any axis.

What happens when you try to select the axis?
A work around would be to post the data reversed. and plot the data that
way, but not being able to select the axis sounds worrisome.
