What is a Canvas?

The only MS Office-specific context in which I know of a canvas is in
Word, where it is the default container for certain types of objects.
Do you need it? Though Word adds it by default you can move individual
objects off it. If at some point the canvas then becomes empty, I
suspect you could delete it.
