Are there other sites or technical support forums that I can look into for a solution? Appreciate any help. Thanks.
There are many other sites but I doubt you will get any more help unless you provide more information.
Firstly have you tried the running the office diagnostics.
Office Button > Excel Options > Resources > Diagnostics.
Then try creating a chart again.
Have you tried opening existing workbooks that contain charts?
Does it crash while creating your chart, or when saving or just some time in between?
Also what cpu speed and how much ram? what other apps are running in the taskbar?
Thanks for the reply. Here are my responses:
Yes I've run Office Diagnostics and it comes back clean. I've done this multiple times with the same result.
Excel crashes when I create the slide and select the data range. The steps are: 1) insert graph 2) select data range 3) excel crashes
This happens regardless of what I have open. Typically, I have Outlook open and on occasion the web browser.
My system is a Lenovo (IBM) Thinkpad T60, Intel CPU T2300 @ 1.66Ghz, 980 Mhz, 3 Gb of Ram.
And this does happen with files sent to me with a graph already created. I am able to click on the graph and "move" the outline of the data selected it seems to work. But when I click on the graph, hit select data, click select data source and then try to select data range (source), then it crashes.
Thanks...and I really appreciate any help you can provide.
what do you mean by "create slide" do you mean chart sheet?
Yes. For example, I select "Insert" then "Line Chart-icon". Excel then has a form of a chart. Then I right click and select "Select Data". At this point I select the icon for "chart data range". I move the curser to select the data range and hit enter......and then Excel crashes.
what if you select the data first and simple press F11
It does create a chart, bar or line...and does not crash. I try to change the data...it crashes.
I'm out of options other than to remove and re-install
Thanks Andy. Appreciate your effort. I may re-install afterall and will update my post with the results. Thanks again..
Here it is 2011 and I think this problem is still around. This is what I've learned: The chart is created before Excel crashes. After Excel restarts, just clicking inside the chart will crash Excel again. The same problem can occur under XP or Vista, I have it on two machines 1 on XP & 1 on Vista. 10 other machines on the same network do not exhibit the problem. It is not related to the spread sheet itself because the same sheet will display the chart just fine on another computer. It is not related to the amount of ram because it will display just fine on a machine with half the memory 2GBytes vs 1 GByte. Repairing office does not fix the problem. Removing and reinstalling Office does not correct the problem. I do not think it is a virus as several different Virus scanners find no errors. My next test will be to repair XP then reinstall XP although there's not much in common XP to Vista.
