Question how to center x-axis data label on column graph?

I can't figure out for the life of me how to center the x-axis labels between the tick marks (there are several different columns per period on the x-axis as well as two different labels for each period (x axis= time and #, y=amounts in, out and total).

Also, for some reason, either the first or last period has an extra tick mark and squishes the labels into the first section- how do I get rid of the extra tick mark?

how to center x-axis data label on column graph?

    Hi,

Right click on the data lables --> format data lables. Select the Alignment tab and select center in lable position.

    Format Axis doesn't work

Thank you, but that doesn't work. I didn't mention that one set is centered (except for the last period where there's that extra tick mark), but then the other one stays on the left section.

Also, is there any way to format the labels so that it's more compact in terms of paragraph spacing? I tried the different options under format axis such as "Label distance from axis," but the labels take up still take up an inch of space unless I chop off one of the labels.

You do not have much if any control over individual axis labels.

Posting an example workbook may help illustrate your problem to those trying to help.
Also tell us which version of Excel you are using.
    Cheers
