What kind of graph is used to show events over time

Where you are tracking a series of events that happen over time and you want to graphically display these events and the time taken what is the best option under Excel 2003?

I naturally tend toward a "timeline" but it seems that Excel does not really do these natively.

So what do people use, what is accepted or what is "normal"?

I have add a xls with two examples I came up with.

The floating bars or gantt chart is the one to use to illustrate start date and duration.

The time line simply illustrates start date.
