Why is the chart data wrong when I hover over it in Excel 2007?
When I hover my cursor over data points in my line charts the pop up box displays the wrong data for example the date is wrong. I neve had this problem with excel 2003 so I am finding my self going back to the old excel to look at charts I have created in excel 2007.
Is it actually wrong, or is the date just in its numeric format rather than date format?
If you right-click on the line and choose 'Format data labels', select Number from the left-hand column of the 'Format Data Labels' dialog window, then choose Date and click Close.
If they're wrong, then maybe your labels are pulling from a different column or series?
Thanks for your reply.
The data is in the right place on the graph but the label that is displayed is incorrect.
The Y axis is in date format and the y data it refers to is in date format.
The data is being pulled from the correct location.
If I open this graph in the old 2003 excel there is no problem even though the chart was created in 2007.
"If you right-click on the line and choose 'Format data labels'" I do not have this option.
The labels even go as far as to say that I have multiple series under the same name on the graph.
Madness
Can you post a copy of the chart and some of the underlying data in a workbook? You can delete any non-essential or private data, and even make up some of the remaining data as long as the issue persists on your end.
Thanks!
Bit reluctant to send company info over the web sorry.
This is obviously not a common problem?
Not so common that I've seen it, but I'm going to move this to the Charting forum, where Andy Pope likes to hang out and maybe he can have some input as he's Mr. Wizard when it comes to charts.![]()
First off do you have Service Pack 2 for office installed?
Can you reproduce the problem with non sensitive data? If so please post example.
Right here's an example.
Note the most recent days of info on the chart, when you hover over the different series for the same date different dates are given! This is a pretty simple example but you can imagine this over many series and many charts especially if you don't realise there is a problem.
I'm guessing we have the service pack 2, in excel options> resources is mentions SP2, also we are always getting updates.
Also the problem still exists when I save the spreadsheet as a .xlsx
Thanks for you help
I don't see a difference between '03 and '07.
I do see that the charttip can be confusing as it sometimes reports the point that is no where near the mouse. But the mouse is over the line for that series.
The algorithm decides to display 20-Aug rather than 7-Aug which is closer to the mouse. But in terms of this feature both versions are doing it.
If you open that same document in 2003 you will see that all the most recent points on the right hand side all display 17/11/2009 but if you open it in 2007 it displays those same points as different dates when you hover the cursor over them.
It just seems silly that to read any charts correctly that are made in 2007 you need to use 2003.
I only have a problem with the "a series" data points on the right-hand side.
The mouse is picking up the "d series", which is in front of it.
But why does it only do this in 2007? Is there a way to fix it?
This is a pretty simple chart, you can imagine what its like with a lot more series.
The reason for the difference is that charts were completely re-written in xl2007.
No fix that I know of.
I have this same issue, but noticed that it varies from Graph Type. For instance a Line graph or a scattter diagram shows you the correct hover data, however an "Area" graph does not give you the correct data. I also can't find an easy fix for this. If someone comes up with one, please post it here.
I have this same problem. You could say that the chart-tip "sometimes reports the point that is no where near the mouse" but the problem seems to be that it's reporting the point of the top-most series closest to the mouse, even if the mouse is close (or right on top of) a point belonging to another series. I don't have 2003 installed to do a comparison, but I don't remember having this problem with multiple series before, and it's definitely not useful behaviour.
