    Reversing Excel PMT formula

    Hi there!

I have an excel sheet which uses the PMT formula but i need to change it because one of the independent variables has now become the dependent one. That is, it is now the required output.

In brief, is there a way to reengineer the following formula so that I get the value of x? All variables other than x are known.

    c = PMT(r,t,x,ax) + bx

    Thank you!

Here is the PV formula that you need to know...
If you have PMT and other variables then you can calculate the PV (x)
here is the pre built formula for the same..

    Re: Reversing Excel PMT formula

Hi Vikas. Thanks for replying. In the formula that I wrote, the variable x occurs three times - twice in the arguments for PMT and once as a multiplicand of b. The formula you shared doesn't take all those occurences into account, and has x in one of the arguments for PV ("ax"). That's what makes this complicated Is it possible to solve for x starting with what I shared? Thanks.

    Re: Reversing Excel PMT formula

Hi. I have attached a demo file. I have highlighted the current "Input" field in blue and the "Output" in Orange. What I want is to make blue the output field and organge the input field, and put values in other cells accordingly.

    Re: Reversing Excel PMT formula

    Hi Vikas,

Thanks a lot for the help. I think I didn't specify the requirement clearly. I can only start with cell C10 (the orange one), and I need to end with the value in cell c2. So to your statement "i think c2 should be c4 as your initial cost is c2", the answer is that in the original formula my starting point is c2 only, and c4 is dependent on c2. c3 is also dependent on c2 so it cannot be referenced in any final formula.

To clarify, the only cells that your new formula can refer to are C10, C6 and C5 (apart from other interim value cells you may populate using only C10, C6 and C5), and it needs to output the value given in C2 (not C4). C3, C4, C7, C8 and C9 must not be referred. I am uploading a new file in which C10 is explicitly shown as the sum of C8 and C9

    Thank you!

    Re: Reversing Excel PMT formula

    In this formula ..
I have used only those cells which you said i.e C10, C6, C5 except from one cell C7 the residual value, which is needed ..
