[Solved] worksheets doing wierd things, dont know why

    Hello,

I am new of course and have used Excel for many years but I am not any type of expert.

While working on my spreadsheet today I must have accidentally touched something that turned the spreadsheet into a holy terror.

I cannot type anything into the spreadsheet. It is pretty much STUCK!

If I touch any of the area it turns blue but I cannot type anything in, change anything or delete.

When I touch the left and right arrows it moves to another sheet to the left or right

When I touch the up and down arrows it takes me either to the top or bottom of the spreadsheet.

It's like it's in a scroll lock of some sort but I sure can't figure it out.

If I open a new Spreadsheet it is in the same formatting so I can't even start over if I wanted to.

Is there anyone that can help me???? I am desparate.

Smile I cannot unformat my excel program

    Hello,

I'm going to try this again. Apparently I goofed the first time and didn't post properly. Hopefully someone can help me.

While working on my spreadsheet today I must have touched something I shouldn't have because my spreadsheet is stuck in some kind of mode that I cannot get out of.

I cannot type or make any changes, type in any information, change anything.

When I touch a cell it turns blue.

If I arrow up or down it goes to the top and bottom of the data and the right and left goes to the right and left of the data.

This is not just on this one workbook. It is for every spreadsheet I open or try to start new. So the problem is something I did to Excel program not just the workbook or spreadsheet.

I have used excel for many years but not for a lot of extensive stuff so I am stuck!

I appreciate any help you can give me.

    THX
    Debra

Sounds to me like a sticky Ctrl key.

Well it can only be one of two... Time to start dismantling that keyboard.

Re: worksheets doing wierd things, dont know why

I am sorry for the Re-post but could not do what I was asked to do to fix the first one. I'm new on this board so I'm trying my best to navigate but couldn't edit the title only the body. So then I tried to delete the post and start over and couldn't find it.

Not a problem, I had changed the title for you For future reference, you would click EDIT POST on your 1st post, click ADVANCED, then edit the title there.

    Back to your problem...
Check the SHIFT and CTRL keys, to see if they all depress when pressed, and return up when released. Test to see if the left key "feels" the same as the right key (there is normally a SHIFT and CTRL key wach side of the KB)

Check to see if you get odd behavious in other programs (word, web brousing etc). If you do, it is probably the keyboard

If you have a spare/anotehr KB, try swapping then and see if the problem goes away?

Re: worksheets doing wierd things, dont know why

    Thank you FDibbins...

I was in panic mode because I was on a deadline and just couldn't figure it out. So I left it alone for a little while and went on another job for a few hours and came back to it. I'm not sure how, I'm not sure why and I'm not sure when it all happened but when I came back to it (by the way it's on a laptop so I couldn't just swap out a keyboard) I opened up a different spreadsheet that I didn't care what happened to the data in and started pressing every key on the board with and without the SHIFT & CTRL keys and as mysteriously as it started, it stopped. So now...everything appears to be back to normal.

I want to thank everyone that tried to help me, I appreciate your time and I'm glad I found this forum and will try my best to follow the rules and guidelines in the future. Now that I have found you, I see by reading other posts that you could come in handy. While I've switched over to Excel over 20 years ago (former Lotus user) I use it daily but usually not for complicated and/or serious calculations, I do from time to time run into a few snags that I wish I could take short cuts on that I know are available but I don't understand how to use and end up taking the long way home.

So again thank you for your time.

Perhaps pressing all those keys like that "unstuck" 1 of them, without you knowing? Anyway, Im really happy you resolved your problem, I know how frustrating that can be

I cut my teeth on Supercalc and Quatro Pro, way back when, then switched to 123, and then to excel, look forward to helping you with your questions in the future

I think you are probably right FDibbins and I appreciate the assistance. I hated Quatro Pro...only tried it for one day and that was enough. Really loved Lotus though and which Excel had one of my favorite functions. If it has it I've never been able to figure out how to set it...lol.
