Excel dropping titles, axis labels when printing chart

I have a workbook I have been using for the last two years without a problem. The sheet in question has data, and four charts. I added a fifth, and things were fine for three months or so, but now it has decided to omit the chart titles and most (but not all) of the axis information on three of the 5 charts when I print it.

On screen - it's all there. Print preview - it's all there.

If I print in "fast draft mode" (HP C5280 printer) - its all there.

If I print in "normal" print quality mode (or "best quality") the titles & axes disappear.

I have tried deleting the charts and recreating them. No change.
I have tried copying the individual worksheets to a new workbook (in the vain hope that maybe this will cause the pages to get 'rebuilt' and maybe get rid of any accumulated detritus?) No change.
I have tried changing fonts, colors, and replaced print cartridges. No change.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated,
    cheers,
    Uptix

If I were you and if this was important, I would reinstall office. I can't think of anything else.

    Hi Kitu-gudu -

Thanks for your suggestion. I have just reinstalled office 2007, and .... no change.

I guess I need to recreate the spreadsheet from scratch??

    cheers,

    You can also try this:
    1. Open your document
    2. Press CTRL+A and after that press CTRL+C
    3. Make a new document and press CTRL+V
    4. Try to print the new document

It's a long shot, but it's worth trying. If this doesn't work, I would suggest that you recreate the spreadsheet from scratch. I can't think of anything else for now.

Re: Excel dropping titles, axis labels when printing chart

    Thanks again -

I tried this (and also tried a couple of other variants of recreating the spreadsheet. Each time I got the same results (graphs show up fine on print preview, or draft printing, but when I try to do a 'normal' quality print, various titles and axes disappear).

Finally, I gave up, and labouriously recreated the spreadsheet from scratch, doing test printing at various stages along the way. All was fine until I created the last graph, and [enter expletive of your choice] THE SAME THING HAPPENED.

    Then a eureka moment -
For no particular reason, I made the graphs very slightly larger (they were 7cm x 8cm, I changed them to 7cm x 9cm), widened the margins ... and now they print just fine.

    Go figure...

What confused me was why the screen view, the print preview, and low-res printing were all ok, but a normal print just decided to drop 50% of the titles (why not drop them all? Or just one? If it drops off the printed version, why doesn't it drop off the preview?). If the print preview was consistent with the printed result, I would have got there quicker. Such is life.

Maybe someone else will benefit from my pains.

Thanks to the forum for suggestions,
    cheers,
    Uptix

Chart Title Not Printing Problem is NOT solved at all

    >Then a eureka moment -
    >For no particular reason, I made the graphs very slightly larger (they were 7cm x 8cm, I changed them to 7cm x 9cm), >widened the margins ... and now they print just fine.

A problem is solved when the cause is identified and a work around the problem is discovered.
I'm having the same problem - charts that printed fine last month don't print now - and I'd like to know why Excel won't print the chart titles and axis labels at 600 DPI. Works fine @ 300DPI but distributing a chart with special printing instructions is not a solution.

Changing a chart size 1 cm is also not a solution. Just so happens that it worked once for Uptix on one particular chart. That's not a reproducable solution.

If anyone (includeing Microsoft) knows why this problem started popping up, please post the reason and the fix.

    Thanks,
    BhanteWayne

Re: Excel dropping titles, axis labels when printing chart

This problem was introduced in KB2596596, released around December, 2011.
See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2596596 for Microsoft's admission of the problem.
The solution is to remove the patch.
    Now the problem is solved.

I uninstalled this update and the problem was resolved. However, a side effect is that my combo boxes and list boxes no longer have borders when they print so the values appear to be floating on the page rather than contained. Any suggestions?

Re: Excel dropping titles, axis labels when printing chart

I have a problem with half the data labels printing, only part of the legend printing, all the horizontal categories are printing, some of the vertical categories printing when I print the whole worksheet. I can print to PDF each chart individually but it changes the colors of my chart from Blue/Gradient to gray and green. I tried to fix this on the original workbook then I cut and paste the data into a new workbook and created a new chart. The same issues are occurring. I do have the aforementioned patch but it isn't helping.

I have upload the "new" chart (rough) and the PDF that was printed.

    Thank you!

Thumbs up Re: Excel dropping titles, axis labels when printing chart

I had this problem. However, it was resolved when I changed print quality (via Page Setup) from 600dpi to 300dpi.

    Hope this helps.
