How to make a cell value dynamic when the referred value changes?

Hi, I just have a quick question.

In cell A1 of Sheet2, the value is static and made as: Sheet1!B:B, which means that it refers to column B of Sheet1. As this is a static text, it will not change even when new columns are added before column A of Sheet1. How do I use a formula to make cell A1 of Sheet2 automatically update when new columns are added in Sheet1? For example, if a new column is added before column B of Sheet1, then cell A1 of Sheet2 needs to be changed to Sheet1!C:C.

I know named range can make this happen, but I prefer to use a formula to accomplish this.

Not sure what you're trying to do. If you add a new column A in Sheet 1, and copy the formula in Sheet2 cell C1 to C2, you get an error because your formula is looking for something in cell A3. If you copy A2 to A3 and change the reference to column C, you get the same result (27) as before.

Precisely what are you trying to do? Why are you using INDEX and MATCH? How about a before and after in your example workbook?

Based on your new description, if you make Sheet2 cell A1 equal to

then adding a new column A in Sheet1 will make Sheet2 call A1 display as Sheet1!C:C

You will, of course, need to revise your formula in Sheet2 cell C1.

Isn't this resolved over on your cross posted thread?

I'm afraid your post does not comply with Rule 8 of our Forum RULES. Do not crosspost your question on multiple forums without including links here to the other threads on other forums.

Cross-posting is when you post the same question in other forums on the web. The last thing you want to do is waste people's time working on an issue you have already resolved elsewhere. We prefer that you not cross-post at all, but if you do (and it's unlikely to go unnoticed), you MUST provide a link (copy the url from the address bar in your browser) to the cross-post.

Expect cross-posted questions without a link to be closed and a message will be posted by the moderator explaining why. We are here to help so help us to help you!

Read this to understand why we ask you to do this, and then please edit your first post to include links to any and all cross-posts in any other forums (not just this site).
