    Split text with delimeters

    Hi,

In Col a I have data formatted like which all has "-" as the delimeter:

IIBIT Sydney -Summer 2012-FUNDAMENTALS OF LAW-BB5
    MIT Sydney -Summer 2012-BUSINESS ECONOMICS-BI9
MIT Melbourne -Summer 2012-BUSINESS INFORMATION SYSTEMS-CP9
    IIBIT Sydney -Summer 2012-FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING-BC5
    ATMC Melbourne-Summer 2012-PROFESSIONAL COMMUNICATION-CP9
    MIT Sydney -Summer 2012-PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT-CT5

Is it possible to use a formula to split out this into 4 different cells so:

    Col B IIBIT Sydney
    Col C Summer 2012
    Col D FUNDAMENTALS OF LAW
    Col E BB5

    Thanks

Select the Column A Data and Assume that the Data is starting from A2 Cell.

Press Alt+D+E (to get Text To Columns)>>Select Delimited>>Under Delimiters>>Give Tick in Other and enter -
Press Next>> In Destination Select B2 Cell>>Click Finish

cant do that, users need to drop a report in and have this split out by formula so there is no user intervention required!

No, there is no rule about using more than one forum. But most forums, including this one, have rules about cross-posting and also about common courtesy and good manners.

Your post does not comply with Rule 8 of our Forum RULES. Do not crosspost your question on multiple forums without including links here to the other threads on other forums.

Cross-posting is when you post the same question in other forums on the web. The last thing you want to do is waste people's time working on an issue you have already resolved elsewhere. We prefer that you not cross-post at all, but if you do (and it's unlikely to go unnoticed), you MUST provide a link (copy the url from the address bar in your browser) to the cross-post.

Expect cross-posted questions without a link to be closed and a message will be posted by the moderator explaining why. We are here to help so help us to help you!

Read this to understand why we ask you to do this, and then please edit your first post to include links to any and all cross-posts in any other forums (not just this site).

Common courtesy is the order of the day. Avoid coarse language, personal attacks and inflammatory remarks. Address your concerns at topics and not at people.

thats works amazing when the data is in column A, what about an instance where the list is in column c?

I tried this formula when the list was in Col C and the returned result was shifted by 2 places

    thanks

It's not. You seem to have glossed over the bit that refers to personal attacks and inflammatory remarks.

Thank you for adding the link.

MysticGenius, I would ask you for a bit more courtesy to members that are offering (for FREE, mind you) suggestions to help you with your question. This forum, like others, and indeed just about anywhere else you go, on the net or in the real world, has rules that we require members to abide by.

If you have not 9had chance to take a look at our rules, I suggest you take a few minutes to do so. the link to them can be found right at the top of the screen in the blue bar, titled Forum Rules

    Re: Split text with delimeters

@MysticGenius - NOTE: The boilerplate text in post #8 was not written specifically for you, it is a common text insert used to remind others of the Forum Rules they agreed to and appear to have not actually read. In that verbiage there may be specific comments that do not apply directly to your thread, but the overall rule cited is the point that should be acknowledged.

Our contributors actually try to NOT make the forum reminders a personal thing, merely, "here's the rule you need to review and why". And then we all move on once it's acknowledged and/or corrected. Thanks.
