VLOOKUP when Lookup Data is not in the left column

    Hello,

I am try to create a function where the Surname of a student is returned when the value of a non-left column is "y". I know I could use a VLOOKUP if the "y" was in the left most column but I have many different columns with Y's in them and they will keep changing so this is not an option.

Let me show you an example:
Here is the sheet where teachers put in the students who are participating in each event:
    Screen Shot 2014-01-29 at 10.04.09.png
Notice the 'Y' for the 1500m is in the 4th column.

Here is where I need the surname of the student to appear.

The complete excel file is also attached.

In fact I need the surname of both students who have 'Y's to appear in each column but I was hoping to cross that bridge next.

    Thanks in advance

Re: VLOOKUP when Lookup Data is not in the left column

    Welcome to the forum.
    Tip:
Don't post/upload pictures. Members do not tend to redo the data. Attach a real spreadsheet instead.

To attach a sample workbook. Make sure there is just enough data to make it clear what is needed. Include a BEFORE sheet and an AFTER sheet in the workbook if needed to show the process you're trying to complete or automate. Make sure your desired results are demonstrated, mock them up manually if needed. Remember to desensitize the data.

Click on GO ADVANCED and use the paperclip icon to open the upload window.

Your post does not comply with Rule 8 of our Forum RULES. Do not crosspost your question on multiple forums without including links here to the other threads on other forums.

Cross-posting is when you post the same question in other forums on the web. The last thing you want to do is waste people's time working on an issue you have already resolved elsewhere. We prefer that you not cross-post at all, but if you do (and it's unlikely to go unnoticed), you MUST provide a link (copy the url from the address bar in your browser) to the cross-post.

Expect cross-posted questions without a link to be closed and a message will be posted by the moderator explaining why. We are here to help so help us to help you!

Read this to understand why we ask you to do this, and then please edit your first post to include links to any and all cross-posts in any other forums (not just this site).

    hi,
here attached is the solution I'm proposing.
    it seems to work.
formulas are array formulas so they work by doing CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER after writing them.
formulas can be dragged horizontally (but not vertically depending on the type of event - sorry but for now it's the best I can achieve).

Re: VLOOKUP when Lookup Data is not in the left column

    Sorry for the cross posting,

I have never posted to a forum before and did not know how many people would read the so I tried to maximise my chances of someone seeing the posting who knew the answer.

Though I have also been spending a good deal watching YouTube and reading other forms. The final answer to my problem ended up being to use a nested index and match formula. Here is the final syntax:

    =INDEX(A4:A7,MATCH("y",D4:D7,0))

    which returns the Surname "Johnson"
