Filtering Text

Hello,

I am trying to filter a column of text, and unsure how to or if this is possible. Each Cell contains 1 sentence, with roughly ~3000 cells in the column.

I have a list of words I want to use as keywords for filtering the column of text. I would ideally like to use a text file, so I can keep a tidy track of the keywords. Is it possible, and if so how would I then use the list of words/.txt file in order to filter the column of text in excel.

In practical terms to make things easier. I have a column of ~3000 sentences, and need to filter for only the sentences which contain company names (these will be in the text file as a list).

How would I go about doing this? If you have any questions, which would lead you to be able to help me, please do not hesitate!

Thanks in advance!
Nitesh

Re: Filtering Text

Can you upload a sample workbook, with a couple dozen sentences, and a handful of company names (all mock data)?
It will be easier to test possible solutions, and easier for you to transfer the solution to your actual workbook if you make the structures similar.

Re: Filtering Text

If this does not work, upload the sample workbook as suggested

1. make a 1-column table with all teh words you want to search on/for
2. add a helper column and use a vlookup() to find those words
3. in the filter drop-down, uncheck FALSE in the helper

You should then be left with a list that contains your words
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)
2. If your question is resolved, mark it SOLVED using the thread tools
3. Click on the star if you think someone helped you

Re: Filtering Text

Have attached an excel file, you'll be able to realise which column has the sentences, they are essentially tweets from popular twitter users.

The txt file is a file with the S&P 500 companies. So any company in that list which is then repeated in tweets, i would like for it ultimately filter.

As for the list, that is a quick mock up, the real one would be looked through properly and i would be adding more words within, so i would filter not only apple, but iphone, ipad, etc etc but that would be something i can adjust later, once the foundations of the filtering system works.

Thanks, for those who give this a read and try to help me!

FDibbins, any way to use a txt file though, I haven't tried your method though, because it would be last resort to use an in-workbook list.

Re: Filtering Text

Hey guys, since i can't find a way to use a txt file, and noone has of yet helped. i've been looking at using

and sticking the word Apple in G1, and running this down the column H.

However, i cannot get this to work, and of course i would need at the very least to make the G column a list of companies not just Apple, and I do not know how to edit the line to make that work :s
