    Range finder

This may be an impossible task, but I thought I'd ask. I'll give you the scenario. I have a list of 25 students who take a test and receive scores anywhere from 0-100. I don't care about a passing score. What I need to do is set improvement goals for each range of students, high(scoring), medium(scoring, and low(scoring). For example, the higher scoring students need to improve their scores by x points, medium range improve by x, low range improve by x. The improvement numbers can vary and are irrelevant. I know that I can sort the list of students & scores in ascending or descending order...But is there a way to,then, separate that list into high, medium, and low scoring ranges without setting predetermined high, medium, or low ranges? It would almost be like a "range finder" where excel could somehow determine those ranges and then I would assign improvement goals based on the results.

It's a long shot, but if it can be done, any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Woops read this too fast.

You could try min, max, small and large functions.

    Re: Range finder

Thanks for the response. I know it sounds weird, but no. The improvement score would be dependent upon the scores in the range. I don't necessarily need the scores to be passing. I just need each range of students to "go up" and that would be determined after the ranges are found.

For example, students take a pre-test. We then need to determine which students fall into the low, medium, and high ranges. After the ranges are determined, I might see that 10 students scored between 0 and 30 (low range), 8 students scored between 31 and 40 (medium range), and 9 students scored between 41 and 50 (high range). I might then set a goal that my low scoring students will go up by 20 points, my medium scoring students will go up by 15 points, and my high scoring students will go up by 25 points.

We're working with students at all levels in a classroom...so we set improvement goals based on the pre-assessment scores. I know people could just sort the data, eyeball it, and set the ranges, but I'm tying this into another program and a range finder would cut out a lot of work especially for teachers who have in upwards of 130 students.

Does any of that make sense?

I think I might be able to work something out with conditional formatting.

Maybe something like this would work for a start. Enter the base scores for high, medium, low and the improvement required and the results will be shown beside each student.
