Hey guys,
I have a very infuriating problem (bet you've never heard that one before!) with hyperlinking. I have created a hyperlink in a cell that looks like this:
Now, my file REQ0597.xlsx is located in the same folder as the the master file I'm trying to open it from (called 'REQ Generator'). In theory, the file should simply open up when I click on the hyperlink. I have tested this same setup on multiple computers at work and the file opens as expected on everyone else's computer without a hitch. I'm using excel 2013. They are on 2013 or 2010. But it doesn't work on mine. So, what happens on mine? Please Login or Register to view this content.
- I click on the hyperlink and I get a dialogue "Opening C:\Users\etc etc etc\REQ0597.xlsx Some files can contain ciruses or otherwise be harmful to your computer. It is important to be certain that this file is from a trustworthy source. Would you like to open this file?"
- I click on "OK"
- Excel does not open the file. I get the windows timer spinning as though it's thinking. This will run indefinitely, unless I click on something in the document. If I click, the timer goes away and nothing happens.
- Interesting behaviour in excel after this. It is almost like it's in a semi-crashed state, or there is a window somewhere which is not opening properly (there is no other window). The arrow keys stop working. i can't move around the spreadsheet any more. I also can't hit 'enter' to type in new data is that just goes to a new line in the same cell. I can edit text in cells, I just can't confirm it (or delete it).
- I have to restart excel to get out of this weird behavior.
- If the file REQ0597 is already open, then excel just simply jumps over to it with no dramas. But that's pointless for me, I need it to open the file from a closed state. But maybe it'll help troubleshoot.
- I have tested the hyperlink function with a jpg and it worked fine. Also works with websites fine too. It's just this damn xlsx format and i also tried xls and that doesn't work either.
So what have I tried?
- The microsoft fix - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925757. It doesn't work. I have tried everything I can think of in the registry. <CLSID> doesn't exist. I made it and put in the hack. Put the hack in xlsx folders, everywhere. nothing helped.
- I've also tried this locally and on the network. I have gone to the trust centre in excel and ensured the folded is 100% trusted. I have turned every single security feature in there off. Nothing works.
If anyone can think of something else for me to try, that would be great. I have search every forum I can find and only these options pop up. Interestingly, most people don't seem to have an issue with the file not opening after they click OK. It's just me. Though i did find one other person with my exact problem but it remained unsolved. A lot of people tended to only get this virus warning message for files OTHER than excel. But I seem to only get it WITH excel. It works fine with pdf, jpg, docx. Only excel files. WHY?!?
Thanks
