Is there a shortcut for going to the top of a column when I'm at the bottom of a long range with a bunch of empty rows in between (so control up doesn't work)?

CTRL+Home is the closest I know of.

Ctrl + Home will put you back at Row 1 Column 1,
If you want to go to the first row of the current column you would have to set up a hotkey (example Ctrl + t) to a macro.

If you click on the "name box" (upper left, below home tab, where it shows the address of the current selection), you can enter the address of a cell you want to select. So, if you are in G123 and you want to jump to the top of column G, enter G1 in this box.
