i have an big file that takes a while to calculate. I keep my calculation set on manual. a few times a day I create a csv. file out of a database and open it in excel and the file starts to calc and I end up having to wait it out. Anyone have an idea on how to prevent that from happening?

Try this ..
Before you open the csv, open a new book, and set the calc mode to manual.
Then open the csv from File > Open
All subsequent files opened within the same session of Excel will assume the
calc mode of the 1st file opened, irrespective of their saved calc modes.

myself that it's calculating even though it's been told not to. sorry

have you tried disabling automatic calculation?
go to 'TOOLS>OPTIONS>CALCULATION', put the selection to manual instead
of automatic and when you want it to calculate just press F9
