Grid lines disappear when importing data

I sometimes import data in the copy-paste way from completely different sources, eg. a program on the web or whatever, which has arranged the data in a table.

It is often succesful with the data neatly arranged in the spreadsheet in columns and rows and all, but sometimes the gridlines disappear even though 'cell format' is set to 'none' in 'grid lines' and the settings have a mark for 'visible grid lines' and their color is 'automatic'. Only the imported area misses the gridlines.
It is of course possible to set some grey gridlines manually in cell format, but then I get them on the print also and I don't want that.

Why do import of this kind delete gridlines?

PS. My Excel is a non-english version so I'm not sure of the terms 'cell format', 'grid lines', etc., but I hope you understand it anyway.

    Hi,

    check the Format Cells, Pattern,

you will find it set to White, set to No Pattern.

Thnx Bryan, I was too focused on the grid lines, so I forgot the pattern.

By the way - it is sometimes a problem that 'visible gridlines' are visible only if no pattern color is chosen. If I use a pattern color, I usually for clarity add grey gridlines, which must be deleted before printing - not overly smart, but it works.

Is there a setting that keeps grid lines visible regardless of the chosen pattern color (except of course if the two colors are identical)?

    Grid Lines

I have discovered that selecting the Forms Toolbar, and then selecting the GRID icon in the lower left corner will make grid lines disappear.

    Maybe that is happening.

Or, you might opt for Past Special and its options.

    Hi harryhill,

the problem relates to, If you select a block of cells, and Format Cells, Pattern = White, the gridlines for that selected block are not visible.

This can also happen if cells are 'paste'd from a web etc.

    Gridline problem - another idea

The grey on screen gridlines on my screen wouldn't display in certain areas on one of my spreadsheets - the following worked:

    Tools/options/view/gridlines ticked - automatic
    Format/cells/ pattern/ ticked automatic (doesn't show auto).
Highlight all affected rows by clicking on the number at the LHS, go to "colour fill" (paintpot icon in toolbar) and click on "no fill" NOT the white box.

    Hope this helps.
