Repeat a charatcter to fill a cell

I want to have a user enter a letter in a cell and then complete the cell with dashes. In Formatting > Cells > Custom, there is a way to tell Excel to fill the cell with a dash (or any other character(s)). I cannot remember how to fill this Custom entry in. I can't find in Help either.

    Thanks for any help, Brade.

add an asterisk and the character to repeat after the format of the cell...

e.g. General*. will repeat the dots.
Where there is a will there are many ways.
