    disabling a cell

I want to disable cell A2 so when you tab from A1, it skips A2 completely and brings you to A3. I've tried to protect, unprotect, hide, unhide, the cells and then did the same to the worksheet, but that seems to only effect formatting. I want the text in the cell to stay there, but for the cell to be completely non-functional. Any suggestions?

First, you have to select the entire sheet (or at least the rectangular portion of it that will contain cells that you want to use)... then go to Format|Cells and from the Protection tab, deselect "locked cells"

Then select only the cells you want to lock and go back to the Protection tab and re-select the "locked cells" checkbox.

    Click Ok.

Now you can go to Tools|Protection|Protect Sheet... and deselect "select locked cells" and click Ok.
