Is it possible to restrict user rights to a particular column?
Here's what I'm trying to do:
Set up a spreadsheet so that 4 different departments can use it. Each department can only modify a particular column of data. They can view the other columns.
Is this possible to do in Excel?
You can lock the cells using macro. In case any body wants to modify he'll have to provide a password.
Now you can provide four different passwords for four of your columns.
But I think there'll be some shorter way to do this. Though I am not aware of any except the macro way, but you'll surely get some reply from the experts.

How can I use a macro to lock a column with a password? Can someone show me? I'm a newbie at this.
Good afternoon skeptical
You don't need to use VBA. Try this :
Go to Tools > Protection > Allow Users to Edit Ranges
Click New
In the Refers to Cells box, click the selecter control and select the whole of column A
Type in a range password and click OK
Confirm the password.
Then click on new again and do this with as many columns as you need to, each with a different password.
Before you close click on Protect Sheet and OK.
Now you can give each department their own password and when they try and edit the column, they will have to supply a password in the first instance to do so.
Don't forget the passwords
