Unhappy How to embedd "Harvey Ball" (symbol) in a cell

I would like to embedd a symbol into a cell. I dont want it to be done by using Fonts. By symbol I mean Harvey Balls (Plan, Do, Check, Act) symbol embedded the same as the "and" (&) symbol. I have seen it done once on a spreadsheet but did not get a copy and I would like to recreate it as a way of visually showing the status of an action item.

    Thanks

Did you see the response I posted in your last thread on the exact same topic?

    Why not use a font?

    Hi Shg,

    Arh, good question

I am using it in a Data Validation List so if I use Fonts I dont get the Harvey symbol in the drop down list.

Also I can see other possible uses, and it bugs me to know that it can be done but I don't how!

I don't think you're going to see symbols in a data validation drop-down under any circumstances.

You could do it (sort of) with a ListBox from the Control Toolbox.

    Hi shg,

Thanks for your help so far

I've attached an example where it has been done, but you will notice that the symbols are different sizes. But it is working in the validation?

You've made your point very well -- but I don't know how to duplicate it, sorry.

    Someone else here will.

It does use a Harvey Balls font, though.

    Thanks Bigmack,

I have seen these solutions before but none of them work they way I want in data validation lists

    Thanks again

The only way I could duplicate the list was to use VBA to generate the Unicode strings!

Here is a sheet I created from scratch using a small UDF to generate the UNICODE characters!

Then just use validation list referencing the cells as normal!

    Thanks squiggler47

I think you have done it. At least I know that it is created by "UnicodeChar".

But can I create my own UnicodeChar?

Some of the Havey Balls are different in size and I need them to be larger, I've tried increasing font size but then the size difference become obvious.

However you have helped me a lot. thanks again
I will continue to explore other unicodeChar symbols now I know how

I took the codes from your original set and also combined the ones on wikkipedia under harveyballs!

The unicode characters are fixed, but using the ones on wikipedia they should be a matched set, the circle/cross one isnt part of the set which is why it appears different!

Re: How to embedd "Harvey Ball" (symbol) in a cell

Although I now have found a way of doing what I set out to do, I am not necessarily happy with the results, because the Harvey Balls symbols are not a matching set (some are different in size).
This makes the speadsheet look a little unprofessional.
I have now explored many unicode symbols, and there are thousands, some quite intricate, try typing this in a excel spreadsheet =UnicodeChar(9731) or (1160).
These are created somewhere? I'd like to know how

I'm going to try using pie charts

They are defined by the Unicode Consortium

The results may vary depending on the font you use as well!
