Actually - tried to respond back but the network was locked up.

I was going to say that the back and forth DonkeOte and I had - while good discussion is meaningless if it does not answer your needs

His appraoch is right on given the limitations of the PT - which BTW I was getting ready to ask the community if anyone had solved the text issue as I want to use Xs in a PT to show a MATRIX diagram

Glad you jumped in - hopefully as DonkeOte and I put a lot of things up - you find some tidbit that helps and some approach that gives you an idea to get done what you need. I tend to try to make the tools work as I have to leave it with people who do not have the VBA or even macro expertise to alter/repair/modify what I do and in many cases my customers cannot use macro enable SSs - so I have to do it in basic excel
These may not be constraints on you

As I said earlier on in the thread you can use a Custom Number Format on the Data field to generate Text in a small minority of instances, for ex. if you want 1's to display as "X" use a number format on the Data Field of: "X";;
You are obviously constrained by the standard constraints of Custom Formatting.
