Question Can I have more than 256 columns?

I realize that might be a stupid question, but it seems odd that "Excel" would allow you to have 65,536 rows, but only 256 columns. I'm nearly out of columns, and would prefer to keep everything on one sheet with the current lay-out.

Thank you in advance for your help.

    Not in Excel 2003.

    Options are:
    - Multiple sheets
    - Upgrade to 2007

Q: How many rows are using?

    Thank you, JB.

I currently have 207 rows, and am nervous that I will soon be over the limit.

Re: Can I have more than 256 columns?

207 rows doesn't put you anywhere near the limit of 65535 rows in Excel 2003, or 1+ million rows in Excel 2007.

I'm guessing you meant 207 columns? I think JB wanted to know how many rows you had to see if perhaps your data could be switched. Have your current column headers going down the left side of the worksheet in rows, and have your current rows go across the top in columns. If you have more than 255 rows of data, this obviously won't work and your only options are to upgrade to 2007 or span your data across multiple worksheets or workbooks.

Add mind-reading to moderator skill-set...hehe. That's exactly what I was thinking.

Re: Can I have more than 256 columns?

Yup, exactly what I meant, I have 207 columns. Sorry for the confusion.

As for transposing the data, I have several thousand rows, so that won't work.

How many columns and rows does "Excel 2007" have?

Re: Can I have more than 256 columns?

According to http://visio.mvps.org/Excel_2007.htm, there are several enhancements to the limitations of rows, columns, memory, colors, etc. in Excel 2007.

I've been using Excel 2007 for several months now, and having over 1 million rows and 16,000+ columns has really come in handy.

Re: Can I have more than 256 columns?

Caution about using anything beyond Excel 2003 standards in Excel 2007:

If you share your file with other users that don't have Excel 2007, it won't work as they won't be able to see any data beyond 256 columns x 65535 rows.

In order to use the full Excel 2007 worksheet (16 thousand columns x 1 million rows) it needs to be saved in a new format (.xlsx, .xlsm, etc.)
