    Data Validation - lists

    Hi,
I was wondering if I could get some help with a data validation list problem. I currently know how to create validation lists in Excel 2007. I was wondering if it was possible to have a list of values in the drop-down menu but then have Excel enter a different value based on the selection. An example may make this more clear. In our company there are a lot of codes that are linked to colors. Instead of having our employees learning color codes (among many other codes) I would like them to be able to simply click on the color, say RED, in the drop down menu and then have Excel enter the code for RED - the code for PLAIN RED at our company is 1519. It is a challenge to make our temporary employees learn many color codes, so this would make it a lot easier. If the question is not clear, I can clarify.
    Thanks a lot.
    Matt

    Re: Data Validation - lists

Not with Data Validation per se - you could as you say use the DV list to permit them to select colour text and then use a VLOOKUP in an adjacent cell to retrieve the colour code based on the selection in the DV cell.
