    using range names in graphs

    hello there,

    I am creating graphs and I'd like to define the series in it through name ranges
    I tried writting the names for each of the series, and although it seems to work (it does show the range when I write the name) when I finish editing ranges name, x and y values it says the formula contains an error and the range names are taken as text...

    it's quite basic, but I can't work it out --- any hints?

    thanks a lot

    Re: using range names in graphs

    Hi,

    you'll need to include the file name or the sheet name when you enter the range name for the series.

    In the formula bar, make sure you see:

    =SERIES(sheet1!$A$1,'FileName.xls'!LabelRangeName,'FileName.xls'!DataRangeName,1)

    or in the Source Data dialog box make sure that the Values are defined like this:

    ='FileName.xls'!DataRangeName

    and in the labels field:

    ='FileName.xls'!LabelRangeName

    Avoid pie charts with more than two data points. Why? See here (pdf, 559 kb). The only acceptable pie chart is here.
