# Make only first letter at first words to be uppercase, other words is lowercase

1. ## Make only first letter at first words to be uppercase, other words is lowercase

This formula should be very often to use, but i cant found it anywhere, so i ask this here

For example in a1 is :
mike is playing basketball, he is very great player

i want to make it in b1 to be uppercase only in first letter so :
Mike is playing basketball, he is very great player

i know about proper formula =proper(a1) , but proper formula is make uppercase to all first letter in all words, we just need first letter in first words to be uppercase (and to every first words after dot if it can)

2. ## Re: Make only first letter at first words to be uppercase, other words is lowercase

If this is in cell A1:
mike is playing basketball, he is very great player

In B1 put the following formula:
=UPPER(LEFT(A1,1))&RIGHT(A1,LEN(A1)-1)

3. ## Re: Make only first letter at first words to be uppercase, other words is lowercase

Another alternative:

=REPLACE(A1,1,1,UPPER(LEFT(A1)))

4. ## Re: Make only first letter at first words to be uppercase, other words is lowercase

This is interesting, thnx basketmen for asking. How about if you want the results to appear in A1? Is it possible,

Samia

Hi,

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but I have searched everywhere and can't find the answer to my noob question:

Where do I paste the code =PROPER(A1) in order to capitalize the first letter of all words in a worksheet? And it looks to me like the 'A1' means that I'll only be applying this to cell A1; is there a way I can apply this function to an entire column?

Peter,,

Welcome to the Forum, unfortunately:

Your post does not comply with Rule 2 of our Forum RULES. Don't post a question in the thread of another member -- start your own thread. If you feel it's particularly relevant, provide a link to the other thread. It makes sense to have a new thread for your question because a thread with numerous replies can be off putting & difficult to pick out relevant replies.

8. ## Re: Make only first letter at first words to be uppercase, other words is lowercase

=upper(left(a1,1))&right(a1,len(a1)-1)

9. ## Make only first letter at first words to be uppercase, other words is lowercase

For example in a1 is :
mike is playing basketball, he is very great player

i want to make it in b1 to be uppercase only in first letter so :
Mike is playing basketball, he is very great player

=UPPER(LEFT(A1,1))&LOWER(RIGHT(A1,LEN(A1)-1))

Simply use this code..Cool..
