Excel is very slow to load files

i had a file with 10,500 lines, 18,000 kb and it seemed slow to load (about a minute) every time i made changes and then saved it or reopened it.

so i broke the file up into 3 smaller files by cutting and pasting. i deleted all empty lines and columns beyond the file content. i defragged my compter. i cleared all excess format in job history - but -

one file now has 3,900 lines, 22,300 kb and takes 4 minutes to load.

one file now has 2,000 lines, 20,100 kb and takes 4 minutes to load.

one file now has 4,900 lines, 14,500 kb and takes 1 minute to load.

    what is wrong?

Re: Excel is very slow to load files

    hi,

Can you please provide more detail about the content of your files?
Uploading a sample workbook with a small set of data & any formulae will make it more likely any helpers can provide effective answers.

For general speed issues have a look at www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/excel/slowresp.htm

I suspect that it's not so much the number of rows you have in each file that is slowing things down, but more the actual formulae within the rows. Do you use any/many Sumproduct, [ctrl + shift + enter] Array formulae, or Indirect formulae etc...?
I suggest reading all the pages that are list in the menu across the top of each of the below pages on Charles' site:
    http://www.decisionmodels.com/calcsecrets.htm
    http://www.decisionmodels.com/optspeed.htm

On a complete tangent, could there be network printer issues? http://forums.techarena.in/ms-office-support/837875.htm

    thanks for the suggestions.

i am trying to attach a few lines from the first part of my excel file.

however, i am also having trouble attaching the file to my message - i get an error message saying a 'security token' is missing.

Re: Excel is very slow to load files

    hi rgrstvr,

I haven't seen that error & at a glance I can't spot any reference to it in the Forum's FAQ section. Have you tried zipping the file before attaching it?
If this doesn't help, I suggest contacting one of the Forum Moderators or Administrators who can be found in the FAQ section.

Re: Excel is very slow to load files

i eliminated all links - no change in file size or download time.
    i eliminated all programs - "
i cut the size of my file way down to 4 columns & 12 lines - "

i copied the much reduced file to a new clean excel page - the size & download time was reduced, but the pasted copy acts like a photo, does not respond to modification by excel.

i imported the original 20,000 kb 4 min download file to a clean file - it was reduced to a 500 kb fast download file - but the imported links and programs do not work. i can live with redoing the programs - but redoing all the links would be weeks of work.

i tried copying the links from the original file and pasting it into the new imported copy but again it acts like a photo which does not respond to manipulation by excel.

Re: Excel is very slow to load files

    hi,

Are you still trying to upload a sample file?
If you still have the "security token" problem, the Moderators can be contacted here: (http://www.excelforum.com/showgroups.php).

An example file will allow for us to understand easier which means we can make better suggestions. If you're unable to upload a sample file, a lot more detail would be useful...

What do mean by "programs" (are they the macros/VBA code)?
What are the "imported links" & how many are there (please show us an example)?

Re: Excel is very slow to load files

i eliminated all 'worksheet functions' and 'hyperlinks'

i reduced the file to 3 columns and 14 rows

it still is 19,000 kb in size and takes 4-5 minutes to load

i still cannot attach it to this reply

i will try to zip it and attach it to my next reply

Re: Excel is very slow to load files

i have imported my original file to a new clean worksheet and now am pasting the hyperlinks into the new worksheet.

the new worksheet seems to work just fine.

i guess the original file somehow became corrupted and there seem to be no way i could fix it.

thank you to everyone who thought about and/or responded to this problem.

reading your responses did stimulate me to think and continue to work for a solution.

Re: Excel is very slow to load files

    hi Rgrstvr,

I'm sorry I haven't been very responsive in this thread.
    - When a file does upload it shows at the bottom of the post when you refresh the thread. Your file may have been too large to be uploaded (even when zipped).

i can live with redoing the programs - but redoing all the links would be weeks of work.
    (post 7)
Is this what you are doing now?
If you are able to explain exactly what you're doing, we may be able to suggest a faster way of doing it...
What size is the new file?

btw, If your file (File A) has lots of links to external files (files X,Y & Z), you may find that opening the other files (X, Y & Z) first, and then opening "File A" will result in File A loading faster.

If you feel the issue is solved can you please mark this thread as solved?
(To mark your thread solved do the following: - Go to the first post - Click edit - Click Advance - Just below the word "Title:" you will see a dropdown with the word No prefix. - Change to Solve - Click Save)
If you're still/start having trouble again let us know
