    Cells Protection

    Dear all,

I am using Excel 2003 and I'm trying to protect my worksheet. Some cells will be Read only and I don't have probs to do it. The problem comes when I try to allow users to edit the content of the cell while protecting only the format of the cell preventing them from destroying my beautiful template.

    Regards.

    Hi,

When you Protect the sheet just ensure that the 'Allow Users to Format Cells' is unticked - it usually is by default. Then Unlock the cell and protect the worksheet.

Yes, I do that with those cells that are read only. But there are some cells whose content must be introduced by users, so I can't protect them and if I don't protect them they'll be able to change the format too. In other words I need to protect only the format, not the content.

    Thenks!

But that's exactly what happens with the instructions I gave. Have you followed them?

You can unlock the cells wherein you want users to enter data, (Format Cells and untick the locked box), and which you have carefully formatted with your grand scheme. Once you protect the worksheet you are then given lots of options in the Protect sheet dialog box, which allow or disallow various options. e.g. you can prevent insertion of rows, deleting columns, etc, and one of the options is to 'Format Cells' - or 'Format Columns.

Just make sure this option is unticked as you Protect the sheet and the user will be able to add data to the cell but won't be able to change the formats you have decreed.

    Thanks Richard,

That's exactly what I've done and now it works. I thought I had done the same from the begining but apparently I was wrong cause users were able to change the format of my beautifully created templete (one day it'll be in the National gallery, promissed ;-) ).

    Cheers and thanks again.
