    Convert characters to numbers

I have a set of numbers in column E that is not numbers and I want to convert them to numbers
I know it is a copy then paste special

for some reason I can't upload an example but the forlula is A1&B1 in coulmn E
    ex.. a1=3 b1=5 A1&B1 = in E1=35
but e5 is not a number that I can do other things with and need to convert it to a number

    thanks
