unable to enter data in Excel 2007

Hoping someone can help me out with this conundrum. I am unable to enter any letters or numbers into cells. I can copy data into cells, change fill colors of cells and make some other fairly useless changes but when I enter anything into a cell after I press Enter the cell appears blank. Very frustrating, please help.

In the formula bar is there anything present? It may be a formatting thing, or data validation or sheet protection.

Check and see if what you typed is still in the formula bar or not.

    Check the formatting

Select a cell in which you cannot enter data, right-click and use "Format cells". Check that you haven't got some sort of custom format set that would make all entries display as blank, e.g.

    ;;;

If necessary change format to general

Go to HOME tab, Conditional Formatting|Manage Rules.

Are there any rules set that may cause the font to change to background colour?

unfortunately there are no rules and given that the entry disappears once I hit enter, I think it's something else.

Re: unable to enter data in Excel 2007

To best describe or illustrate your problem you would be better off attaching a dummy workbook, the workbook should contain the same structure and some dummy data of the same type as the type you have in your real workbook - so, if a cell contains numbers & letters in this format abc-123 then that should be reflected in the dummy workbook.

If needed supply a before and after sheet in the workbook so the person helping you can see what you are trying to achieve.

Doing this will ensure you get the result you need!

Re: unable to enter data in Excel 2007

Hi NBVC, I really appreciate your help, and everyone else's suggestions. Attaching a dummy workbook makes sense except in this case when I can't enter in any data, what I can show you is limited. As shown, filling color in cells, grouping and adding a header is possible but any entry in a cell shows up until I hit <Enter> then disappears in both the cell and the formula bar. If you can see the settings I have from the attached that is probably the most helpful, just not sure if that is possible. Thanks again.

You are right in this case, it didn't help too much.

I typed in random cells, and it displayed as expected.

What happens if you go back to Normal View?

Does it happen in other workbooks too?

Also try getting rid of the outlining and see what happens.

Do you have freeze panes set? That seems to have been a known cause for cell contents disappearing...

If it happens in all Excel workbooks, you may want to do a repair install.
