Excel converting decimals to whole numbers

I'm creating a sheet to do some scientific calculations which need to be accurate to 4 decimal places. When I enter one of the values into a cell (2.773) it changes the number to 2773.0000. I've checked the number format and it is set to number with 4 decimal places, I guess this is going to be something silly but what is going wrong here.

    Thanks

This might be a silly question, but are you manually typing in "2" "7" "7" "3" without putting in the decimal place? Excel won't automatically put it in there for you....

If it is a result of a formula, you could try =ROUND(<Insert your calculation here), 4)

    Hope that helps.

Sorry, typo'd that formula... Meant to say:

    =ROUND(<Insert your calculation here>, 4)

    Hello,

    Set the format as General.

    Thanks for the quick replies. I am typing "2" "." "7" "7" "3" .

I have changed the cell format to general, the cell now shows 2.773 but in the formula bar the number is still displayed as 2773 and the formulas are calculating 2773.

I've now had chance to try this on an older version of Excel (97) instead of 2002 and the number is displayed and calculated as 2.773, I've even added more decimal places and 97 calculates it properly - all cells are formatted as general. Is this a fault with 2002?

I can't duplicate that behavior with what I'm about to tell you to undo in either Excel 2003 or 2007, but ...

Tools > Options > Edit, untick Fixed decimal places
Entia non sunt multiplicanda sine necessitate
