Is there a way to sum up the column A that are the same but using column B's value? Example:
car 3
car 4
cat 1
dog 1
car 6
dog 3
I wanted to sum up all of "car". In this case it's 13. I wanted it to be as simple as possible. Maybe just using formulas and not macros. However if macros is needed I can use that too as long as the output area is simple to copy and paste or use.
A Sumif function might do what you want. See the attached.
great thanks! however, is there a way of displaying:
car
cat
dog
on the results area without having to actually type the names in on the first column?
basically i wanted to have excel also put in those 3 different items on the first column as well. Currently, I may have say 20,000 rows and say 5000 of those rows are unique different names so I wanted to have excel tell me those 5000 unique names and also count it for me without me having to actually type in each uniqe names myself and then counting it using that reference. So basically what I wanted was to just copy and paste into a sheet all the info, then get a result of all the names combined (one unique name per row) and have their quantity show up
Make a unique list of values and reference that in your formula in the criteria section.
You can use a Pivot table.
Only you need to define Title row...

try this my friend.
Top of the data...
Yes, I've saved the workbook as 2003...
Look here, Pivot tables are easy to learn... This is guide video for both 2007 and 2003:
