Automatic Hyperlink to File Location/Path on Server

Is there a way to format Excel and other MS Office documents so that when you open a new document and save it somewhere on a server, the hyperlink to that specific file location (path) appears in the footer of the document?

Also, if files were to be re-organized on the server, is there a way to have this hyperlink automatically modify to match the new file location/path?

You can easily enter the filename and path into the footer of any Office document.

Is that what you are asking? Or are you asking for it to automatically enter the filename into the footer of new documents without any action on the part of the user?

Thank you for the link, but I am more interested in the latter -- Is there a way to automatically insert the file path with no action on the part of the user?

You would need to modify your Normal.dot

Note that the link above only applies to Word documents. You would have to follow similar procedures for other document types.

Here is a link for Excel documents.

    Thank you for this reference!

This is something that would need to occur on each machine connected to the network, correct?

A related question - is there a way to opt out or in to this formatting? For instance, if a user wanted to create a document without a file path footer after this normal.dot file was modified, could this be easily done?

    1. Yes. Each new PC would need this done.

2.They would need to go into the footer and delete the field.
