Formula to obtain a numerical value corresponding to descriptive questions & answers

    Hi,

I created an online survey where the questions (with multiple choice answers) correspond to particular points. Once the survey is completed, the spreadsheet gets updated with the particular answer selected by the participant. But I would like to get the corresponding points updated instead of the answer. Below is a sample question for a clear understanding:

Question: Following your foot surgery, grade your pain level as follows

    No pain - 45 points
    Moderate pain - 30 points
    Severe pain - 15 points

when the answer is selected as "Moderate pain", I would like to get the spreadsheet updated as 30 (points) instead of "Moderate pain".

However I tried to create a column in the spreadsheet incorporating a formula to select the points corresponding to particular answer. But I am not sure about the formula as I am not familiar with Excel (2007 version)

I would greatly appreciate if someone could help me.

    Thank you.

Hi Guest_ and welcome to the forum,

So as I understand the question an answer of Moderate Pain for the above question would show as a "2" (for answer 2) in the spreadsheet.

I can only suspect that question 4 may have values of 10,20,30,40 while the above question has values of 45,30,15,5.

See the attached to see if it comes close to what you need.
