    Excel Vlookup format issue

I download data from various software into excel, then use the vlookup function but find that the downloaded data needs to be edited (F2) to get vlookup to read it. I have tried copying formats to the fields and it will not work, I have tried to selectt all the rows (lookup values) hit F2 and enter and that does not work. Is there a globally edit the value so that the vlookup will use it?

it would help if you actually posted a worksheet with some sample data that needs f2 used
