Is there a way to tell Excel to make a graph in black and white?

    Hi there --

I am preparing graphs for publication and they will be published in black and white. I'm spending an awful amount of time re-formatting Excel's automatic color formatting. Any way to indicate it should automatically format a graph so it's readable in black and white?

    Thanks,
    Sarah

Yes, select the chart after you've formatted it the way you want, then go to the Design tab. Over on the left, click Save as Template. When you want to insert a new chart, you can click the arrow in the lower right corner of the bar that says Charts in the Insert tab, then select your template from the Templates folder.

I have tried this but it gives me a chart much like the one I created.

When you select data and create a scatterplot then Excel automatically formats it in color (i.e. a different color for each line.) Is there a way to indicate that I do not want it to automatically format it in color but rather in black and white (i.e. a different shade of gray or different line styles or markers or some way to distinguish lines in black and white)?

Re: Is there a way to tell Excel to make a graph in black and white?

I created a sample table of data, formatted it in a black-and-white scatterplot, saved it as a template, then created another table of data and applied the template to it. The only hiccup was that the second had more lines than the first, and so the additional ones were in color. So far as I know, there's no way to change this aspect of it. However, if the template you use is based off the data table with the most lines, it should be fine. If you are still having issues, please post a dummy workbook. Thanks.

If you have used theme colours shoud should just be able to apply the Gray scale theme.

On the ribbon, Page Layout > Themes > Colors > Grayscale.

Or you can select the chart.
On the ribbon, Page Layout > Page Setup> Dialog launcher (arrow bottom right corner of group). Chart tab > Print in Black and white.
