Can you find and replace symbols?

Hi,
I have a large s/sheet full of sizes displayed as such
39*36mm

If I try the excel function "find and repalce" the * with an x, to display as a height and length measurement, it replaces the size was a x only

Does anyone know a quick way to do this rather than cell by cell?

i have a similar problem when replacing A* grades in my workbook. The problem being that * is a wildcard for all.
I use the find and replace box, clicking the find all option. I sort the found values and then select all of the relevant ones at one and click replace.
Its still a manual procedure but faster than manually clicking in each cell.

Im sure someone on here will have a much better solution.
