Sum selected cells into a new cell

I learned so much in the past few weeks-here's another one I can't figure out.
    I want this to happen:

I select (w/the mouse) a number of adjacent rows in column P (text). They are all part of the same sale.
The sum of the values in Column K ($) for the rows selected above, in column P, appears...
Into Column O, in the the same row as the bottom cell in the group selected in column P.

As a Bonus Prize to me:
Now the selected rows remain indicated, either with alternating shadings of the entire rows in the sale, or as shown. Oops-this didn't paste well. In my "as shown" version- P2 & P3 should be shaded gray. P4 no shading. P5, P6, P7, P8 shaded gray. Also-K, O, and P should be the headings for the three rows, not all bunched up.

    Hia Banyonb,

I think a Named Range of Cells is what you need. If you select the cells you want to sum and then NAME them with a name, you can use the range name in a formula. See
    http://www.ozgrid.com/Excel/named-ranges.htm

I hope that gives you another tool in your Excel box to get better and easier answers.

I'm having trouble understanding the Named Range of Cells. Would I be able to use this to do calculations "on the fly"? I would like to enter items into the rows for a sale, then be able to immediately get the total for that sale and tell the customer. I'm basically using this as a "point of sales" calculator/record keeper. Is there one of the methods listed on the linked page that would work for that? Sorry to sound so stupid, this stuff really makes my brain twist. Thank you!

    Hi,

If you want the Range to grow as you enter data, you will need to use a Dynamic Named Range (DNR).
    See them at:

    http://www.ozgrid.com/Excel/DynamicRanges.htm or
