is it possible to reference back to information on a spreadsheet automatically
.
example is i have a sheet to calculate the remainder of a bar of steel once a length is cut. i then want it to use this remainder to cut any other pieces if possible
say
length reqd no reqd stock length
5160 8 10000
9500 7 10000
250 13 10000
4705 6 10000
i want it to check what is the remainder and then see if that can be used to cut any other length. then to tell me how many bars i'd need.
i have a sheet made that will work out remainder lengths but don't know how to reference it back

bump for no response.
im thinking that this maynot be possilbe, maybe a macro or progam would be better?
See the INT function, and use it to calc whole lengths, then multiply the result by the length reqd, then subtract from stock.
i already have the sheet doing that. if you look at column H,J,I it automaticly works out the length from 1 stock bar (typical r)emainder (or non typical remanders)
or are you saying somthing else?
what i need it to do is to take that remaining length and check it against the other stock lengths required and then use that instead of a full stock length
I have updated the sheet now will also show if the length cannot be cut from the stock length and will show if the remainder is under 150
but still no luck getting it to reference it. it would have be bee somthing like
check row "X" for number greater than Check row "Y" then use number "Y" instead of "Z"
but in a continual for so it would check for longest lentgh then second then third etc
i have attached the latest version to look at also. have a play see if you can figure it out.
Book2.xlsx
bump again. should I let this die or does someone know.
am I not clear or is it just not possible?
still holding out for hope
