I am using Excel 2010 Professional Plus. When attempting to sort by date, having formatted the requisite column to date format (dd/mmm/yyyy), the sort returms data sorted by the day (dd) only, thus mixing the years / months. Can anyone please advise?

that sounds as if the dates are stored as text. You said you formatted them? Can you post a workbook with only a few cells for inspection?
